Dancers from various tribes all over Papua New Guinea gather annually in Goroka in the Eastern Highlands for a “sing-sing”.
They are judged for their dress as well as dancing and prizes are awarded. It is the greatest tribal cultural show on Earth. It was started in 1956 by the Australians who, as a colony themselves, were, ironically, the colonial power in papua New Guinea, until its independence in 1975. The original purpose was to promote understanding and peace between and among the hundreds of tribes that either never had contact with one another or had been enganged in tribal wars.
These photographs by Paul L. Gabbert were taken on the 50th anniversary of the goroka Cultural Show. The Installation was designed by DB Bailey.
